FDI Industry Spotlight
Agricultural Processing

Abundant high-quality agricultural inputs mean Montana is the perfect place for agricultural processing. “Montana produces some of the highest quality wheat and barley in the world. Our producers invest millions of dollars each year in research to maintain that reputation. This gives processors the opportunity to secure the best ingredients at the highest quality, while also having access to the leading transportation system in the country,” notes Cassidy Marn, Executive Vice President, Montana Wheat and Barley Committee.

Montana is a leading producer of certified organic wheat, dry peas, lentils, and flax, and is home to global companies such as Malteurop, Marubeni, and General Mills. Sweet cherries, sugar beets, seed potatoes, and hay are among some of the other crops grown in the state. Montana-grown barley and hops fuel a robust craft-brewing industry statewide and provide an essential input for many well-known Mexican brews. If you’re anywhere in the US drinking a craft beer, there’s a good chance that the barley came from Montana.
